Job summary:
South Pole is looking for a Managing Consultant to play a key role in international consultancy assignments and business development efforts related to carbon project development, carbon standards and methodologies and methodology innovation.
As a global sustainability solutions provider, South Pole works with clients in public and private sectors to build solutions for a sustainable society and economy.
The Policy & Strategy team sits in a business line responsible for sourcing carbon projects, developing them and bringing resulting carbon credits to market.
In addition to supporting Business Line colleagues, the team works on public and private consultancy assignments for clients aiming to develop new and innovative ways of leveraging carbon markets. It also provides policy and technology insights and market intelligence to various teams within the business lines.
The Managing Consultant will be responsible for coordinating and implementing consultancy services in relation to carbon standard project eligibility and procedures, as well as for the development of methodologies for new use cases.
The Managing Consultant will also provide technical guidance to project teams, act as the main point of contact for clients and leverage his/her vast technical expertise and network to drive business development activities and generate new leads.
Short-listed candidates will have an excellent understanding of principles that underpin carbon credit generation, and ideally have prior experience working in consultancy roles and in international and/or developing country contexts.
Main tasks & responsibilities:
- Manage and supervise large/complex consulting mandates, including on carbon methodology revision / development throughout the entire development cycle until approval by the relevant standard.
- Plan and implement consultancy work related to carbon standards and methodology development ensuring efficient and high-quality implementation.
- Support business development efforts and the development of proposals for consultancy work for corporate, non-for-profit, and public sectors, on topics related to carbon project feasibility and eligibility, carbon methodology development, Article 6.4 mechanism, and Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV).
- Lead and directly manage teams and external consultants contributing to consultancy projects.
- Contribute to knowledge-sharing activities and expand skills and knowledge linked to the topics and services offered by South Pole.
- Contribute to the development of South Pole’s thought leadership activities, services, products, marketing materials and offerings.
Requirements:
Essential -
- University degree, ideally at a Master’s level or higher, in a relevant field;
- Sound understanding of the principles that underpin carbon credit generation;
- In-depth knowledge of carbon standards’ methodologies, tools, and procedures;
- At least 5+ years of work experience in carbon project development under different standards and/or the management of methodology revision/ development of new methodologies;
- Good understanding of industrial processes, energy industries, waste management, transport, etc.
- Experience in engaging with carbon standards and other relevant standard-setting bodies;
- Excellent project management skills, from both a technical and administrative standpoint, and proven ability to guide project teams in a multi-cultural and multi-geography context;
- Ability to analyze and solve complex problems and articulate solutions for different target audiences;
- Ability to create high quality written deliverables in English and contribute to consultancy proposal preparation.
- Excellent prioritization and time management skills.
Desirable -
- Expertise and knowledge in decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors : carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technologies, cement, power sector and hydrogen;
- Strong experience in stakeholder and client management;
- Team management experience;
- Industry-relevant connections, with a network of potential clients, collaborators, and other relevant stakeholders;
- Mastery of other language(s) than English, in particular French or Spanish;
- Comfortable operating in a fast-paced international environment.
