The Fund Management team is responsible for developing and managing sustainable impact funds, as well as other facilities, vehicles and platforms for investments in climate action. Our scope of expertise covers a variety of topics related to sustainable land-use, low-carbon energy, climate-smart cities and/or clean technology, to name just a few. Job summary:

As an Associate Director - Public Sector, you will have an important role in raising funds with public sector clients for South Pole’s offering on impact funds, climate-related research, action platforms,  and large development assistance programs that have a climate change orientation.

In this role, you will initially focus on new business development with the public sector while providing well-informed market insights to benefit the further development of the South Pole’s services and products in this area.  You will build on and further develop your strong network with European governments, international organizations (including the EU),  development banks, and development agencies. In this role, you will actively engage in building partnerships, networking and securing new funding as well as coordinating and supervising on-going Funds & Platforms mandates.

Main tasks & responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with other business developers, grow South Pole’s client base by establishing new contacts and securing new mandates/funding, with a focus on governments
  • Develop one or several new action platforms, development assistance or research programs with a focus on sustainability and climate change
  • Provide technical inputs to benefit product development activities and oversee the development of Expressions of Interest and winning proposals to acquire funding and mandates
  • Over time, manage new engagements, including the supervision and guidance of teams during implementation, with a particular focus on client management and representation
  • Contribute to the strategy of the South Pole Foundation, with a focus on fundraising efforts for philanthropies and government agencies.
  • Mentor and train South Pole’s staff on new mandates you developed, for example through learning sessions, direct feedback or supervision on specific mandates
  • Supported by South Pole’s Marketing and Communications team, help to further strengthen the South Pole’s Foundations profile through representations on conferences and in working groups, writing blogs, webinars, and other communication channels


Essential -

  • A Master’s degree 
  • The expectation is to have at least 10 years of relevant work experience in fundraising with public sector institutions 
  • Demonstrated experience securing new income of over 1 million Euro in size from public sector institutions 
  • Previous experience of managing a team (internal and/or external collaborators) on specific mandates 
  • Experience managing project budgets of over 1 million Euro in size 
  • Ability to both work independently (not requiring close supervision) and in teams 
  • Fundraising skills and good business sense to identify and seize opportunities in a fast-paced and competitive market environment 
  • Strong networking skills and a proven track record of closing deals 
  • Strong network with potential clients and other relevant stakeholders, particularly governments, international organizations (including the EU), development banks and agencies 
  • Proven ability to create high quality written documents (proposals and deliverables) in English 
  • Excellent oral and written command of English 
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse and multicultural teams

Desirable - 

  • Fundraising experience in the area of climate change and with a focus on developing countries 
  • Some post-graduate work in environmental sciences, law, business, finance, or related disciplines 
  • Some experience directly line managing/supporting and developing more junior staff would be beneficial 
  • Excellent oral and written command of German and/or French 
  • Professional proficiency in other national or regional languages is of advantage
