Sourcing Manager - Renewable Energy and Carbon Community Based Projects

Job summary:

As part of the Projects & Portfolio business unit within the Global Sourcing team, the Sourcing Manager will primarily focus on emission reduction project leads and opportunities in the Africa region. The Sourcing Manager will also support business development and project sourcing related activities including but not limited to researching new project leads, draft procedural documents, client/project owner follow up, attending meetings or events relevant to sourcing, undertake data collection for eligibility assessments, financing plans and budgets, as well as due diligence processes under the guidance of the Sourcing team and the lead for the Africa region. The role is a combination of business development, project analysis, and stakeholder engagement. The Sourcing Manager is based in Cape Town and reports to the local Senior Sourcing Manager. The Sourcing Manager would focus mainly on renewable energy, RECs, and community-based project development in the region. There will also be opportunities to work on AFOLU project development however, this is not the focus of this position. This is a role with exciting opportunities and unique challenges!


Main tasks & responsibilities:

  • Lead on efforts to source new renewable energy, RECs, and community-based project leads and opportunities in the region and support the Senior Sourcing Manager for the African region in the efforts to source new AFOLU leads and opportunities in the region
  • Support African project sourcing operations activities for carbon credits and possibly other environmental market products offered by South Pole
  • Ensure that sourcing flows and processes (including documentation and interaction with other teams) are in line with the company guidelines
  • Manage and maintain Africa sourcing database, ensuring that information regarding project leads and opportunities are well recorded and updated 
  • Support coordination and collaboration with other teams within the South Pole globally in regards to project leads and opportunities
  • Conduct research relevant to new project leads, project developers, project owners, relevant regulatory regimes/policies in the African region
  • Collect and research relevant data related to Renewable Energy (RE) and RECs and Community-based project development
  • Collect data from Project Owners or other third parties for due diligence, financing plans and budgets, technical, financial and legal documentation
  • Where relevant attend meetings/seminars/workshops/events that are strategic for sourcing team activities

Requirements:

  • University degree in Economics, Environmental Sustainability, Business Development and Environmental/Carbon Markets or similar 
  • Minimum 3-5 years 
  • Core experience and know-how: Renewable Energy, RECs and Community-based project development, Operations, Knowledge/Database Management, Business Development
  • Working knowledge of carbon markets and standards
  • Experience in project screening and budgeting/financing
  • Experience of project development and management in Africa, specifically Renewable Energy, RECs and community-based projects
  • Experience and interest in engagements and networking — people skills
  • Comfortable working with a degree of autonomy, with the support of an international and multicultural team
  • Proficiency with MS Office, especially MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and Google Suite
  • Adaptability and versatility 
  • Native or fluent in English is a must, native or fluent in French and/or Portuguese is desirable
  • Language skills, a people person, and networking interest
