Job summary:
South Pole is looking for a Managing Consultant to strengthen its team in Asia and play a key role in international consultancy assignments and business development efforts. The Management Consultant will act as the regional NBS focal point for South Pole’s Climate Policy, Finance and Carbon Markets team and focus on topics specifically related to climate policy, finance & carbon markets, with a sectoral focus in Nature-based Solutions (NbS), working closely on policy matters related to J-REDD as well as develop PPP models.
The Managing Consultant will be accountable for the development and overall management of proposals on climate and NBS policies, carbon markets and climate finance and for the implementation of such projects. You will support the effort to build up the Climate Policy, Finance and Carbon Markets team in Asia. The Managing Consultant will provide technical guidance to project teams and act as the main point of contact for clients. They will also leverage their vast technical expertise and their network to drive business development activities and generate new leads.
The Managing Consultant will manage project teams of varying sizes and contribute to business development activities. In addition, you will provide technical to the support project teams and act as the main point of contact for the client.
Short-listed candidates will have an excellent understanding of global and regional climate policy and climate finance ideally with prior experience working in consultancy and keen to play a central role in the team’s strategic Asia growth plans.
Main tasks & responsibilities:
- Manage large and/or complex proposals/consulting mandates for the public/private sector on climate change policies, carbon markets and climate finance, including both technical and administrative requirements, to the level of quality required by South Pole and the client, for our international clients
- Plan and implement projects to ensure the most efficient and highest-quality implementation throughout their entire project cycle including initiation, planning, design, execution, monitoring, controlling and closure
- Support business development activities for South Pole including leading the development of consultancy proposals
- Support the development of proposals and implementation of advisory mandates for the corporate and public sector on topics such as carbon market instruments, Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, climate policy implementation and financing, sustainable development plans and strategies (e.g. NDCs)- with a focus on Nature-based Solutions
- Handle relations our international, regional and/or local clients and manage the timely delivery of mandates
- Contribute to the development of South Pole’s thought leadership activities, services, products, marketing materials and offerings
- Contribute to the development and improvement of specialised skills, tools and knowledge linked to the topics and services offered by South Pole
- Contribute to business development activities and develop materials to be shared with possible clients and partners
- Topics of engagement may include: Carbon Market Instruments, Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, climate policy implementation and financing, Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) advisory and carbon offset procurement strategies, as well as topics on climate mitigation and adaptation finance, innovative financing solutions, policy recommendations, blended/concessional finance schemes, NDCs and more
- Manage project information and knowledge according to our project management best practices
Requirements:
Essential -
- University degree, ideally at a Master’s level or higher, in a sustainability-related field such as Finance, Economics, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Political Sciences, or related disciplines;
- Relevant knowledge of climate policy, carbon markets, climate/energy finance and/or corporate sustainability both nationally and internationally
- Relevant knowledge in Nature based Solutions and J-REDD
- Excellent understanding of the current national and international policy developments with regard to climate change and sustainable development
- Extensive experience working in sustainability consulting or a related fields
- Excellent project management skills, from both a technical and administrative standpoint, and proven ability to guide project teams in a multi-cultural and multi-geography context
- Excellent writing skills, with proven expertise in creating and reviewing high-quality written documents (proposals and deliverables)
- Excellent stakeholder and client management skills
- Autonomous and proactive, yet strong ability to work collaboratively
- Demonstrable commercial skills and good business sense so as to be able to identify and seize opportunities in a challenging and competitive market environment
- Excellent prioritisation and time management skills
- Excellent working knowledge of all Google Suite applications and MS products (Word, Excel)
- Excellent oral and written skills in English. Knowledge of Vietnamese, Thai or Bahasa language is a plus
- Comfortable operating in a fast-paced international environment
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Diligent, reliable and proactive
Desirable -
- Industry-relevant connections, with a network of potential clients, collaborators and other relevant stakeholders such as governments, development finance institutions, development agencies, and other public or private donors/stakeholders, across Asia
- Team management experience
- Experience working with and implementing activities with public institutions, multilateral funding mechanism and/or multi-stakeholder platforms
- Demonstrable interest in working on climate change mitigation projects, programmes or instruments across sectors and technologies, especially in Asian countries
- Strong analytical skills and mindset
