Job summary:

South Pole is a fast growing complex multinational organisation, and a business which is helping to solve climate change, one of the largest problems the world faces today.  As such we are growing fast with revenue doubling every 12-18 months as we support an increasing number of clients in their ambition to reach net zero.  

South Pole migrated to IFRS in December 2020 as we welcomed external investors on board and took the decision to move to an internationally recognised set of accounting standards.  This role will be the internal subject matter expert on IFRS and the main point of coordination with the auditors.  We are also in the process of delivering an ambitious Digital Transformation Programme to support scalable growth and enable process automation across the business, and we are looking to deliver a full ERP transformation by December 2022 close.

We are looking for a Group Finance Controller, preferably ACA qualified, with a good grounding in IFRS reporting in a multi currency environment.  This role will be responsible for the consolidation of all of South Pole’s legal entities to give the baseline for the monthly board packs for board reporting.  As part of the finance transformation process we are looking for ways to make the existing process more efficient as we move towards the new ERP system.  

Main tasks & responsibilities:

Overall Objective

  • Lead and manage a team of reporting accountants in the regular timely consolidation of our group financial reporting.  Ensure that we are fully compliant with IFRS and that we maintain a robust set of financial controls.  Support the audit planning process and work with the auditors to ensure we have a robust audit plan in place

Main responsibilities include:

Leading and managing the Group Reporting Team and consolidation process

  • Lead and manage a team of reporting accountants in the regular consolidation of our group financial reporting
  • Work in partnership with our Group Accounting team to ensure that timetables are agreed, enabling consolidated figures to be prepared on a timely basis each month for the FP&A team to prepare their monthly commentary and insight for the Executive Committee and board reports
  • Take ownership of group intercompany accounting process and balance sheet consolidation.  Review group balance sheet accounts and suggest any improvements to the control environment
  • Identify and suggest any system and process improvements for a more robust control environment

Ownership of the Audit process and IFRS compliance 

  • Act as main point of contact with our auditors and ensure that all audit issues from the previous year are addressed and resolved in time for 2021 close
  • Ensure that any technical documentation/support is prepared on any IFRS areas to support the audit

Assist in selection of ERP and Consolidation tool

  • Assist in the selection of a short term consolidation tool identifying requirements in partnership with the finance leads and Head of Digital Transformation, selecting SaaS provider of tool for immediate implementation
  • Input into the ERP selection process with suggestions and requirements to ensure that we make the best selection to meet South Pole’s needs

Understand and improve existing Finance processes and controls

  • Review existing systems and processes by working with the Financial Operations Analyst documenting the processes
  • Proactively identify improvements in processes and controls to deliver efficiencies and also to position the processes ready for later migration to the new ERP


  • Qualified accountant (preferably ACA) with technical and detail oriented mindset 
  • Previous experience in external reporting for an IFRS based company would be helpful
  • Experience of managing a small team over multiple locations 
  • Proactive mindset: keen to identify process improvements and help colleagues to action them to ensure successful implementation
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively, both to listen to colleagues to identify key risks, requirements and bottlenecks, and to communicate with internal stakeholders
