Our Consultancy & Advisory Services team provides our clients with outstanding technical expertise that enables the successful implementation of complex sustainability projects. Our expertise spans across multiple topics including land and water management, climate strategies, renewable energies, environmental impact assessments, green products, climate policy, carbon pricing, climate finance, and sustainable finance, to name just a few. Job summary:

South Pole is looking for a Principal Consultant to strengthen our team in Europe and play a key role in international consultancy assignments and business development efforts. The Principal Consultant will ensure the timely delivery of high-quality consultancy assignments conducted mainly in developing countries on sustainability topics. You will be accountable for the development and overall management of proposals on climate change policies, carbon markets and climate finance and for the implementation of projects. You will manage a small team of consultants and be expected to support its growth. You will provide technical guidance to project teams and act as the main point of contact for clients. You will also leverage your vast technical expertise and your network to drive business development activities and generate new leads. Short-listed candidates will have an excellent understanding of global climate policy and climate finance and have significant prior experience working in consultancy in international and/or developing country contexts.  

Main tasks & responsibilities:

  • Manage and supervise large/complex consulting mandates throughout their entire project cycle: initiation, planning, design, execution, monitoring, controlling and closure. 
  • Plan and implement projects to ensure the most efficient and highest-quality implementation. 
  • Lead business development activities for the company including leading the development of consultancy proposals. 
  • Provide technical leadership for the development of proposals and implementation of advisory mandates for the corporate and public sector on topics such as Carbon Market Instruments, Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, climate policy implementation and financing, sustainable development plans and strategies (e.g. NDCs), Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) advisory, CORSIA advisory, and carbon offset procurement strategies. 
  • Interact and build relationships with our international, regional and/or local clients and manage the timely delivery of mandates. 
  • Contribute to knowledge-sharing activities and expand skills and knowledge linked to the topics and services offered by South Pole. 
  • Lead and directly manage a small team of consultants in a multi-cultural and multi-geography context and help it grow. 
  • Contribute to the development of South Pole’s thought leadership activities, services, products, marketing materials and offerings.



  • University degree, ideally at a Master’s level or higher, in a sustainability-related field 
  • Relevant knowledge of climate policy, carbon markets, climate finance and/or corporate sustainability 
  • Excellent understanding of the international and regional climate policy context, carbon market and climate finance developments, and/or the corporate sustainability landscape 
  • Relevant work experience working in the field of climate change or sustainability (minimum of 7 years), ideally in a developing country context
  • Excellent project management skills, from both a technical and administrative standpoint, and proven ability to guide project teams in a multi-cultural and multi-geography context 
  • Excellent writing skills, with proven expertise in creating and reviewing high-quality written documents (proposals and deliverables) 
  • Excellent stakeholder and client management skills 
  • Autonomous and proactive, yet strong ability to work collaboratively 
  • Demonstrable commercial skills and good business sense so as to be able to identify and seize opportunities in a challenging and competitive market environment 
  • Excellent prioritisation and time management skills
  • Excellent working knowledge of all Google Suite applications and MS products
  • Excellent oral and written skills in English


  • Team management experience
  • Industry-relevant connections, with a network of potential clients, collaborators and other relevant stakeholders such as governments, development finance institutions, development agencies, and other public or private donors/stakeholders 
  • Experience working and/or advising on green finance schemes and market-based climate finance instruments in developing country contexts
  • Experience leading or contributing to published analysis
  • Ability to work in French and/or Spanish
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced international environment
