Job summary:

Data insight currently takes place in pockets across South Pole through local, single-use solutions, This purpose of this role is to lead South Pole’s newly-formed Data function, to deliver a reliable, repeatable, extensible data service across the business. As such the role is part of the Information Technology department within Corporate Functions, and reports to the Director of IT.

You will develop and manage the roadmap for Data and Insight delivery across all of South Pole’s internal business areas, and provide the foundation for external data sharing with our clients and partners. Through your vision and leadership, you will deploy appropriate and repeatable data engineering, insight and modelling solutions across our business. Hence your skills will span data solution architecture, through owning and constructing the processes and procedures to transform our information, and the responsibility for delivering compelling and functionally-rich solutions for our analysts and scientists. 

This exciting opportunity will suit an individual who is enthused and equipped to own and deliver the data strategy and solution-set from an early stage of its development, a person who can deploy cloud-first, low code solutions that are appropriate for South Pole’s maturity and opportunities, and who is very comfortable with both delivery and strategy. 


Main tasks & responsibilities:

  • Lead, define, implement, represent and communicate the Data strategy and deployment across South Pole.
  • Deliver robust, secure, integrated, functional Business Intelligence insights to the South Pole business.
  • Enable and collaborate on what-if modelling and advanced analytics to specific user groups.
  • Operate the data management and data quality processes within South Pole, and actively champion the importance and relevance of good data, and the impact of bad data 
  • Full ownership of business intelligence and data stewardship across all business lines
  • Make “build-or-buy” recommendations for data solutions.
  • Work closely with IT colleagues on related change projects, associated infrastructure and security initiatives.
  • Drive innovative ideas, solutions and products for data through leadership and decisive action.
  • Enable strong working relationships with data analysts (key users), and wider stakeholders across the South Pole business units
  • Establish goals and KPIs, assess development progress and evaluate results
  • Stay abreast of data topics, products and emerging technologies
  • Build and lead a small team of Data professionals

Requirements:

Essential:

  • Graduate degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or related field
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant work and leadership experience in similar or related roles
  • Strong interest and track-record in line management responsibility and team development 
  • Prior responsibility for developing and operating an end-to-end data solution.
  • Strong insight / presentation layer product knowledge, especially Tableau
  • Strong data engineering (eg R, Python) and data management (MDM) / data quality (DQ) tooling experience
  • Wide ETL experience across a range of data end-points and transit methods
  • Experience of modelling and advanced analytic solutions,
  • Excellent database / SQL expertise, eg Snowflake, Redshift 
  • Strong security, data segregation and data curation experience
  • Outstanding interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills to partner effectively with key internal stakeholders in order to jointly design innovative solutions that meet their needs

Desirable:

  • Experience in establishing a green-field Data function in a growing, multi-geography organisation. 
  • Open-source GIS experience would be an advantage
  • Familiarity with the Salesforce ecosystem
  • Experience in or passion for environmental issues and understanding of sustainability, CSR and related topics
