Associate Director, AFOLU Carbon Projects Development - Asia

By working closely with project owners and developers as well as their local communities, we manage the complete registration, verification and evaluation of carbon projects to enable the issuance of emission-reduction certificates, in line with official carbon standards. Job summary:

You will oversee a timely and effective generation and delivery of Forestry and Land Use emission reduction / removals projects, as well as the management of the full carbon project development cycle in Asia. Reporting directly to the Director of Project Development based in Europe, you will also support other project offices with global sourcing and project development topics if required and assign relevant project coordinators to support the team with such activities. You will work very closely and collaborate/coordinate on AFOLU PD topics, knowledge management and AFOLU global resource planning/exchange with the Head of AFOLU based in Medellin. You will manage and be fully responsible for a team of (Senior) project coordinators and managers based in the Asia region. Ensuring that project leads are screened and assessed efficiently and that projects are implemented as per agreed budget and timelines, maximising Verified Emission Reduction (VER) output and allowing to reach the yearly gross margin targets. In addition, you will work closely with the commercial Sourcing team, Director of Projects Development and other Associate Directors including Head of AFOLU, the Head of Non-Forestry and the Key Account Management, Portfolio, Global Accounting, Central Functions and HR teams as well as Marketing teams. 

As a part of the Forestry and Land Use team, you will be accountable for the delivery of all milestones proposed for projects under the carbon and co-benefits standards (e.g. VCS, The Gold Standard, CCBS) and collaborate with other members of the Projects and Development team around the world. You will be responsible for the design and development of carbon projects in the Forestry and Land Use sector. In addition, you will be responsible for developing carbon estimations and delivering high quality products (project documents, monitoring reports and others) in English and will assist in the audit process for the validation and verification of GreenhouseGas reductions. You will participate in business rounds, technical sessions, site visits, and other relevant events.

Main tasks & responsibilities:

Overall responsibility and lead for project screening, assessment and emission reduction generation, full carbon project cycle development/management, quality checks for deliverables, project related consultancy mandates and new project sourcing 

  • Team management and ensure issues are actively communicated and discussed with the Regional Director, Director of Project Development, Director of Portfolio, Accounting and HR South 
  • Client, Project Owner (PO), Registry Entity, and Auditor (third party independent certifier) relationship management and related administrative tasks such as invoices, payments and accounting follow ups 
  • Support communications of commercial team in PO relations where needed 
  • Support the Key Account Management and the Projects & Portfolio team with tenders and proposal preparation, the Marketing team in project information requests and the Consultancy & Services team based on availability in coordination with the Head of Project Development 
  • Budget control and human resource management at individual project and project portfolio level; make use of new upcoming internal database feature to manage budget of all tasks and activities with optimum efficiency and effectiveness and ensure the assigned time budget per staff are respected and on track 
  • Managing project budgets of at least 200k EUR in size 
  • Support project teams in other offices with new leads, proposal preparation and project development cycle where required 
  • Take part in growing our AFOLU teams/offices and activities in Asia region and globally together with other relevant internal stakeholders; including building the most optimum teams structures and talented/ambitious project managers



  • University Degree in forestry, agriculture, natural resource management, sustainability or climate change and carbon mitigation related fields 
  • Ability to coordinate workflows within several different teams/regions 
  • Ability to design, develop and implement strategies regarding all future and on-going projects in the region 
  • Minimum 10 years of work experience in Forestry, Sustainability Consulting, Climate Change Mitigation/Adaptation or related fields. 
  • Familiarity with carbon standards like VCS, GS4GG, etc. and co-benefits standards as CCBS 
  • Vast experience in guiding and directing the work of others, with thorough functional knowledge/expertise in the field of ALM, REDD+, ARR and other AFOLU related topics
  • Ability to work on assignments that are diverse in nature, applying company policies, processes and procedures to resolve a variety of issues/problems. 
  • The capacity to solve relatively complex project-related problems independently, and receive general direction on new assignments or projects 
  • Ability to create high quality written documents (proposals and deliverables) in English
  • Have excellent communication skills, especially verbal and written skills in English 
  • Ability to manage targets and priorities and develop own goals 
  • Knowledge of GIS and Remote Sensing 
  • National, or holder of a valid residency permit in Indonesia South Pole


  • Knowledge of additional languages, Asia or European is considered a plus 
  • Good statistical skills 
  • Experience working with local communities 
  • Soil carbon quantification is considered a significant advantage
