Investment Manager, Sustainable Land Use

The Fund Management team is responsible for developing and managing sustainable impact funds, as well as other facilities, vehicles and platforms for investments in climate action. Our scope of expertise covers a variety of topics related to sustainable land-use, low-carbon energy, climate-smart cities and/or clean technology, to name just a few. Job summary:

As an Investment Manager, Sustainable Land Use you will work together with the Managing Director of the Landscape Resilience Fund (LRF) to source investment opportunities, conduct due diligence, and structure soft loans for small businesses to scale climate-resilient land use in developing countries. The LRF is a newly developed fund that aims to scale private investment in climate change adaptation by addressing the funding gap often faced by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that work with vulnerable people in rural landscapes. As part of a growing impact funds team you will pilot and scale flexible financial instruments, continuously update and improve investment processes, contract technical assistance providers, and monitor and evaluate positive impacts as well as manage associated risks. Further, you will assist in fundraising, partnership building, business development, and investor reporting.

Main tasks & responsibilities:

  • Identify small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) working on sustainable land management in developing countries, conduct due diligence, and structure soft loans
  • Create and revise financial models to assess business cases, analyse cash flows, and plan budgets for program implementation
  • Prepare presentation materials to pitch investment opportunities to the board
  • Conduct research on suitable technical assistance services for potential investees
  • Engage in venture building by supporting SMEs in improving their business models, contractual structures, financial and risk management, and impact monitoring 
  • Assist in the contracting and transacting of soft loans
  • Monitor and control SME progress against agreed financial and sustainability targets, review SME reporting, and write annual reports to the board
  • Write investor reports and contribute to thought leadership and blog posts for the LRF website
  • Support business development and proposal elaboration for potential clients 
  • Coordinate business development and implementation with other South Pole units across offices in a dynamic and team-oriented culture



  • Relevant work experience (at least 5 years) in finance; with alternatively other private sector experience, particularly related to sustainable land management and/or agricultural produce sourcing, also considered
  • Undergraduate/bachelor’s degree, preferably in finance, business, or economics; or a degree in agriculture, forestry, or sustainability-related fields in combination with demonstrated financial modeling/investment skills; Masters degree would be an advantage
  • Demonstrated financial modeling and analysis skills, ideally for debt financing
  • Ability to create high-quality investor reports, fundraising proposals, and online articles
  • Methodical approach to work, detail orientation, drive for continuous improvement
  • Proven ability to work across multiple teams and in multi-disciplinary projects
  • Entrepreneurial and proactive mindset, willingness to take initiative 
  • Fluency in English; other language skills (e.g. French, Spanish) are a plus.


  • Professional finance certifications (CFA, CAIA, etc.) or financial modeling standards (e.g. FAST) are a plus
  • Familiarity with climate change risks and adaptation in rural landscapes and climate change adaptation and resilience
  • Work experience and familiarity with venture building in developing countries
  • Familiarity with sustainability impact monitoring and evaluation
  • Experience in venture capital, micro finance, or business model incubation
