Job summary:

The Senior Sourcing Manager will be responsible for sourcing and developing partnerships with NGOs and the private sector to develop nature based solutions to climate change throughout Africa. 

This role requires commercial acumen, business development, strong networking and stakeholder management skills. Deep technical understanding and experience of nature-based mitigation solutions is essential and a broad understanding of related regulations/policies in at least one sub-saharan sub-region (southern, east, central or west) is preferred. 

The Senior Sourcing Manager will work closely with the project implementation team  on technical issues and with the Structured Carbon Finance team to assess, and potentially provide finance for project opportunities. The position will be a key member of the global sourcing team and will report to the Director of Global Sourcing team. 


The successful applicant will preferably be based in Cape Town, South Africa however, other locations in southern and East Africa may be considered.  


Main tasks & responsibilities:

  • Sourcing and Structuring new nature-based solutions projects that are eligible for carbon finance
  • Developing and leading a small team of regional sourcing experts 
  • Negotiate and sign Emission Reduction Purchase Agreements (ERPAs)
  • Drive business development, including targeted business meetings, leading pitching sessions, financial analysis and liaising with clients 
  • Conduct research relevant to new project leads, project developers, project owners, relevant regulatory regimes/policies globally
  • Proactive networking with relevant organisations including attending relevant gatherings and conferences and expanding the existing network 
  • Developing relevant documentation and financial analysis with Project Owners and the project implementation team as needed to facilitate investment by South Pole or by third parties into emission reduction project opportunities
  • Support coordination and collaboration with other teams within South Pole globally in regards to project leads and opportunities
  • Support the development of South Pole’s regional sourcing strategy and ensure this is efficiently and effectively implemented 

Requirements:

Essential:

  • A degree, or equivalent experience, in forestry, environmental management, land-use management, natural resource management, environmental sustainability, ecosystem-based climate change adaptation or similar and at least 5-7 years’ relevant working experience in one, or more, of these fields
  • Strong experience and networks in at least one sub-saharan sub-region 
  • Strong track record in identifying, screening and developing nature-based solutions projects
  • Strong project and financial management track record 
  • Strong experience and networks in at least one sub-saharan sub-region 
  • Proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships with clients and team members 
  • Entrepreneurial and proactive mindset, willingness to take initiative 
  • Excellent written and oral command of English 
  • National, or holder of a valid work permit in southern or East Africa   

Desirable:

  • Masters’ degree in an en environmental or business administration field 
  • Experience of business development in a project origination role
  • Experience working specifically with carbon markets, especially in the AFOLU sector 
  • Fluency in written and spoken French or Portuguese
